Arthritis Q & A

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis and commonly causes pain in the lower back, feet, hips, knees, and ankles. This condition is usually caused by natural “wear-and-tear” of the joints as the natural result of the aging process. Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease and age-related arthritis. Osteoarthritis and many other forms of arthritis cause pain, swelling, and possible deformity depending on the location of the affected joint.

What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?

Symptoms of osteoarthritis usually include:
  • Swelling and stiffness in joints
  • Tenderness and discomfort in joints
  • Reduced ability to move, walk, or bear weight

How is osteoarthritis treated?

When osteoarthritis is diagnosed as the cause of the pain, your doctor will treat the condition with a variety of methods. In many cases, corticosteroid medications are used to reduce swelling and are injected directly into the affected joints. Oral anti-inflammatory medications can also help to cut down swelling and eliminate pain. Orthotic devices, braces, and arch supports are also beneficial treatments and help to protect the affected joints against weight and the impact felt when walking and moving. Braces and canes are typically used when arthritis causes discomfort while standing or moving. Physical therapy can sometimes help a person’s joints remain flexible and can improve his or her range of motion. If a patient is overweight, it is frequently recommended that they lose some weight to reduce the amount of pressure put on the bones and joints. At-home care can also help patients reduce pain and maintain range of motion as well. The patient will be taught stretches and techniques to keep the muscles, tendons, and ligaments strong and flexible. At Premier Family Medical, the doctors can help patients find relief from arthritis symptoms. To schedule a consultation, contact the office today.
